TURBOCHARGING - SUPERCHARGING
- Why Turbocharging & Supercharging?
- To increase the output of an engine.
- To increase output - more fuel can be burned and bigger explosion in every cycle is needed.
- There 2 ways to increase fuel intake
- Build bigger engine
- Is building bigger engine effective??
- Definitely not, because production cost may increase and major problem is weight, if weight increases more power consumption will be there, so it's not suitable in all cases.
- Forcing more Air into the combustion chamber.
- More air inducing means, more fuel can be added more fuel results bigger explosion, finally more output that's what we need.
This is what exactly Turbocharging and Supercharging
SUPERCHARGING
- Process of inducing air into the combustion chamber by using air compressor.
- Device used for supercharging is known as supercharger.
Supercharger is an air compressor that increases the pressure/density of air supplied to an engine.
This results in increasing intake capcaity, more oxygen intake letting it btun more fuel, results more work.
This is actually done with supercharger.
Purpose
- To increase density/pressure of air before entering to the cylinder.
- To increase power output for a given weight and size of the engine.
- To compensate for the loss of power due to altitude.
- To increase volumetric efficiency.
Limitations
- To drive compressor it consumes nearly 20-22 percent of an engine's power output is used.
- Detonation tendency increases.
- Because of maximum pressures engine reliability decreases.
Same as supercharging but here uses centrifugal compresssor driven by Turbine which uses engine's exhaust gases.
- The turbine converts the engine exhaust's potential pressure energy and kinetic velocity energy into rotational power, which is in turn used to drive the compressor.
Advantages
- More power
- More power
- Better thermal efficiency
- Better fuel economy
- Better volumetric efficiency
- Better averageobtained
Limitations
- Cost is high
- Problem of Turbo lag
Turbo charger lag simply Turbo lag also known as "Turbocharger Transient Responce" Time defined as the time taken by the engine to change the power output in responce to the engine's throttle.
